AS the world counts down to the release of the latest Pro Evolution Soccer game, Konami have now released the club names that will feature in this year’s edition, a topic that always causes controversy. This stems from the fact that PES, EA Sports FIFA’s main competitior, is not fully licensed by all the world’s football leagues, with Konami required to improvise team names. For example, Manchester United are branded ‘Man Red’, Chelsea are called ‘London FC’ while Premier League champions Leicester City become ‘East Midlands’. It’s the same with the teams from La Liga, although as Barcelona recently signed a partnership with PES, they are able to be called ‘FC Barcelona’ but Real Madrid are rebranded to ‘MD White’. PES 2017 also has official partnerships with Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund, but had to create some interesting names for clubs from the English and Spanish top flights.
